Apple Cider Vinegar Benefits
Apple cider vinegar or “ACV” as it’s commonly referred to, is one of my top three substances for natural remedies. I use it daily along with coconut oil and clear aloe juice. I’m sure you’ve seen and read about how it’s touted as a super liquid and rightly so. There are too many benefits and uses to document in one post but we’re going to highlight the most common ones here for you to take advantage of.
The uses are almost endless. From health to beauty, cooking to fungus, animals to bugs, you’ll find multiple uses here that you’ll want to incorporate into your home and for your family right away!
What is it that makes this liquid so powerful?
The benefits of apple cider vinegar come from its powerful healing compounds which include acetic acid, potassium, magnesium, probiotics, and enzymes.
When buying ACV, make sure that it’s raw, unfiltered and with “the mother” which means it still contains the beneficial compounds including probiotics. I recommend Bragg Organic Raw Apple Cider Vinegar.
Top 45 Apple Cider Vinegar Uses
- Alkalize the Body
The body is constantly trying to keep its acidity level normal and low. The term for this is homeostasis and it’s what you should strive to accomplish regularly. By doing this, you are establishing a normal, healthy alkaline pH level (a measurement of the body’s acidity levels) which should stay between 7.35 – 7.45. Cancer cannot exist in an alkaline environment. It’s no coincidence that ACV’s pH level is in this very range. It’s very important to find ways to keep pH regulated in the body and ACV is an excellent favorite source for helping the body accomplish this goal.
- Increase Good Gut Bacteria
ACV contains an important acid called acetic acid which is naturally acidic but the effect on the body is more alkalizing and helps to balance the body’s pH level. As a result, the body is more capable of building good healthy gut bacteria.
- Helps Control Weight
Recent studies in multiple medical publications suggest that, because apple cider vinegar causes you to reduce sugar cravings, that it’s possible to reduce body fat by upwards of 10%! Another reason for this is that the acetic acid found in ACV causes the body to expel abnormal amounts of toxins that are normally stored in fat cells. Amazing stuff!
- Balances Blood Sugar
Medical studies show that consuming ACV regularly can balance blood sugar and improve diabetes. How? The acetic acid found in it causes sugar cravings to virtually disappear. Add it to salads and/or add 1 tbsp to 8 ounces of water before a meal.
- Cancer Prevention
There’s been a lot of studies on polyphenols recently and apple cider vinegar contains a high concentration of them. Because of this, medical studies (1,2,3,4,5,6) support the role of polyphenols for cancer prevention.
- Sore Throat
A sore throat is miserable and annoying. Apple cider vinegar soothes and helps knock out a sore throat quickly via its probiotic boosting acetic acid. Use my homemade ACV and honey recipe to knock yours out. I use it for myself and my family. (NOTE: Remember, your diet plays a large role here. Use the principle of “Good In = Good Out”.)
Fight wrinkles, fine lines, sun spots and blemishes with apple cider vinegar. Mix equal parts ACV and water, using a cotton swab, rub the solution on the areas, rinse and repeat twice daily.
- Bug Bites
A bugs bite to our skin creates a low pH level in the area. Similar to how baking soda neutralizes a bug bite, ACV can help balance the pH level back to normal levels speeding the healing process. Swab ACV on the area or add 2 cups of ACV to a bath.
- Skin Toner
ACV is a powerful anti-bacterial liquid due to its high pH level. Fungus and bacteria cannot live in the presence of pH this high (7.35 – 7.45). Simply rub ACV on the desired areas of skin to clean it, then add coconut oil and essential oils of lavender, geranium and/or frankincense.
- Soothes Sunburns
One amazing use for ACV is for soothing sunburns. You’ve probably used aloe in the past but this is a little-known secret. Just add 1 cup ACV, 10 drops lavender essential oil and ¼ cup coconut oil to a warm bath. Not only will you experience the soothing effects of this combo but you’ll be extremely relaxed when you’re done!
- Poison Ivy & Poison Oak
ACV contains healing levels of potassium among other minerals. They aid the infected area by reducing swelling which helps to not itch so much. As an added benefit, ACV can detox the poison or draw it out of the wound for faster healing.
The bacteria that embeds itself into the skin and causes inflammation in the form of acne can be drawn out with the help of ACV. Since the pH level is so high the bacteria can’t be in its presence. Make a 50/50 solution of distilled water and ACV, swab it on the areas needed. Repeat twice daily for as long as needed. For those with severe acne, this will likely take a longer but be patient and stick with it!
I’ve had dandruff my whole life. It was bad when I was young and commercial hair products didn’t cut it. I found ACV and knocked it out naturally. Mix a ¼ cup each of ACV and water, spray your scalp after shampooing, let sit for 15 min and repeat twice per week.
- Athlete’s Foot
ACV is a fungal destroyer which makes it perfect for athlete’s foot. The solution is to add 2-4 cups ACV into a large bowl, add warm water if necessary to cover feet. You’ll need enough to cover one or both feet. Let your feet soak for at least 15-30 minutes.
- Remove Warts
Simply rub ACV topically on the wart and around it, cover it with a band aide and leave it overnight. Repeat daily for a week, sometimes longer, but generally a week. Many see results in a week but be patient if not. It works!
Apple cider vinegar is a natural astringent which makes it excellent for speeding up recovery for burning and itching. Mix equal parts ACV and cool water, apply and rub gently using a swab on the area. Repeat several times per day or as needed.
Similar to a burn, the same concept applies here for wounds. A wound needs to be cleaned and disinfected to prevent a bacterial infection. This is where ACV comes in to disinfect the area while added the additional benefit of speeding recovery and balancing the pH of the area.
- Toenail Fungus
Toenail fungus is an outward sign of an internal deficiency most of the time. Other times your body is asking for assistance in battle. If your diet isn’t helping to resolve this consider using apple cider vinegar to knock out the fungal bacteria. Mix a tbsp coconut oil (melted) with 1 tbsp ACV, swab the infected area and tape the swab on the area to keep it locked on. Leave overnight and repeat for as many nights as necessary. Most claim 48 hrs does the trick.
- Detox Baths
Apple cider vinegar is a liver and lymphatic tonic which can help detox your body. It helps balance your body’s pH and stimulates cardiovascular stimulation, bowel motility, and lymphatic drainage. For this reason, it’s one of my key ingredients in the MRC Detox Drink.
- Hair Conditioner
Get your hands on an empty shampoo bottle, fill it by measuring 1 cup water to 1 tbsp ACV until you’ve filled the bottle. Use it 3x per week after shampooing and voila!, you’ll notice a difference in no time!
- Whiten Teeth
Because of its acidity, apple cider vinegar can remove stains, even deep ones. By simply rubbing apple cider vinegar on your teeth using your finger you’ll see results fast. I just started doing this and the results are excellent for my coffee stained teeth. No worries about your teeth becoming sensitive either like those commercial products do.
- Acid Reflux
This is one of those health areas that is commonly misunderstood. The cause is actually not too much stomach acid but a lack of it, probiotics and low or imbalanced pH level. ACV helps restore that acidity to proper levels, balances the pH and restores good bacteria. Again, 1 tbsp in 8-12 ounces of water for this benefit. Drink it about 5-10 minutes before a meal to allow the stomach to adjust and prepare for the food it’s about to receive. (That sounded like a prayer for some reason.)
- Natural Household Cleaner
ACV is naturally anti-bacterial and with its balanced pH level, it makes for the perfect natural household cleaner. (I especially like it for windows and countertops!) Mix even parts water and ACV in a spray bottle.
- Seasonal Allergy Relief
My friends love me for this one. I recommend it to all of them whether they have allergies or not. ACV breaks up mucous in the body which allows the lymphatic system to drain more efficiently. This also means that your immune system has to work less and you have more energy! Who doesn’t want more energy, right?
- Candida Cleanse
Millions struggle with Candida around the world. Because this vinegar is so rich in natural enzymes, it can help rid and eliminate fungus’ such as candida. Candida is the leading cause of thrush in humans, cause bad breath, UTI’s and digestive issues, often responsible for symptoms of fatigue, memory loss or forgetfulness, sugar cravings, and yeast infections. It’s important to remove sugar from your diet and consume 1 tbsp of ACV 3x daily to aid the body in ridding this fungus.
- Flea Repellent
Dilute 50% water and 50% apple cider vinegar in a warm bath and soak your pet in it 1x per day for 1 week to rid of a bad flea infestation. For prevention, rub the solution behind your pet’s ears and on the back of the neck.
- Cure Colds Fast
Apple cider vinegar is the ultimate cure for colds and like symptoms. The acetic acid is rich in probiotics and loaded with vitamins which allow it to cure colds quickly! Use my homemade ACV and honey recipe to knock yours out. I use it for myself and my family. (NOTE: Remember, your diet plays a factor here too. Use the principle of “Good In = Good Out”.)
- Natural Deodorant
Sweat from our armpits is one way our body naturally detoxifies. Our pits can begin to stink when bacteria and yeast build up there. Commercial deodorants get the job done but at a cost. They contain aluminum and other extremely harmful chemicals which we can’t pronounce too. To top it off, they are all designed to clog the sweat pores to prevent sweating altogether. This is bad obviously. Resolve this issue naturally by rubbing apple cider vinegar on your pits. It becomes a natural deodorant and prevents bacteria growth.
- Varicose Veins
Varicose veins can be painful when the vein walls bulge from inflammation. ACV is great for this as it’s naturally anti-inflammatory which reduces the inflamed vein walls and increases circulation. It is exactly what’s needed. Apply ACV directly and rub in a circular motion which massages the veins. Some even combine witch hazel and ACV increased efficiency. In 1-2 weeks you should see a noticeable difference.
- Lower Blood Pressure
In a 2009 medical study , apple cider vinegar effectively lowered blood pressure consistently over a 12-week study.
- Reduce High Cholesterol
ACV contains a powerful antioxidant called chlorogenic acid which has been found to lower LDL cholesterol and prevent LDL particles from becoming oxidized. Drink my ACV and honey elixir for this benefit.
- Improve Digestion
Ahh, you’ve made it to my favorite one! ACV reduces gas and bloating, combats constipation, reduces inflammation (think IBD, Crohn’s, etc.), increases stomach acid which is critical in breaking down the foods we eat and reduces acid reflux. All you need to do is add 1-2 tbsp in 8-10 ounces of water before each meal. This balances the pH level and increases acidity to break down foods.
- Prevents Muscle Fatigue Post Workout
I’ve not tried this myself but a friend swears by it. Soak a cloth with ACV and cayenne, apply directly to the sore muscle for 5 minutes. Reapply as necessary. Drinking pre-workout helps the lactic acid from building up as well.
- Bad Breath
Nobody wants bad breath. This one applies to all levels of bad breath, even halitosis. Brush your teeth with a mixture of coconut oil and baking soda, swish ACV in your mouth for 1 minute and then spit it out. Rinse again to remove the ACV acid from your teeth. Leaving it could cause it to eat the enamel.
- Food Preservative
Because apple cider vinegar is a natural food preservative it can be used on any food to prevent aging, mold, browning, etc. Think fruits, cheese, vegetables, bread, meat. The possibilities are endless here. The application is where it can differ. Most apply an ACV soaked cloth or paper towel to the food as the preservative. It works wonders!
- Prevents Bladder and Kidney Stones
The American diet has created a plethora of disease and ailments. One of them is the painful bladder and kidney stone. No need to head to the hospital though next time because you have apple cider vinegar on hand. Use my detox drink to pass these nasty stones in 1 day. Drink it twice per week to prevent them from ever coming back. Make sure to get rid of any added sugar in your diet as well.
The process of uric acid crystals forming between joints is what gout is. If left untreated can cause deformation. A daily regimen of 2 tbsp ACV and 8 ounces water will take care of it in around 1 week for most. If it takes longer you should still notice a dramatic improvement.
- Improves Nutrient Absorption
In order to absorb nutrients, we need stomach acid. In multiple studies, 90% of humans tested had stomach acid levels that were so low they weren’t absorbing enough nutrients. Good thing we have ACV which increases stomach acid, pH, enzymes and probiotics to help us balance back out. Drink 2 tbsp ACV with 8 ounces water before each meal. Another option is to mix leafy greens with ACV.
- Facial Cleanser
Apple cider vinegar can help reduce the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, and blemishes. Soak a cotton swab or cloth in diluted ACV and dab on and around the areas required. Rinse and dry afterward.
- Fade Bruises
We all get them right? If you have a bruise that is in a visible place and it’s embarrassing for instance, maybe you want it gone fast. Soak a cotton ball in ACV and tape it to the area. Resoak when the cotton ball dries.
- Smelly Feet
Because of the acetic acid which creates an alkaline environment, it makes it hard for bacteria to exist anywhere near it. By simply soaking your feet in a solution of ½ cup ACV and 5-8 cups water you’ll rid your feet of any foul smell.
- Weed Killer
Apple cider vinegar by itself is an effective weed killer. But how about adding essential oils of clove and orange? That will increase the effectiveness against weeds and deliver a power punch.
- Itching Skin
Because ACV is a natural antiseptic, antifungal, and antibacterial agent, it is a perfect solution for itchy skin, especially dry skin (dandruff included). This also means it works on animals as well and it won’t harm them if they lick it. Simply bath in ½ cup ACV.
- Boost Energy
Low energy means your body’s pH level is very low and acidic. By increasing that acidity level using ACV your energy will boost. ACV is alkaline meaning that it has a high pH level. Take a shot of 2 tbsp ACV and 8 ounces water to see the boost. Also, remember that your eating lifestyle plays a role here and if left untamed will not notice a difference.
- Clear Sinuses
Once again we’re dealing with bacteria and infections here. ACV’s pH level not only prevents these infections from happening in the first place, it can also cause it to run in its presence. Add 1 tsp ACV to warm filtered water and stir. Using one hand to plug one nostril, snort the solution into the open nostril from the palm of the other hand. Repeat with only filtered water to finish the flush.
That’s it! However, we have only touched the surface with apple cider vinegar. Doing a simple google search for ACV benefits will turn up around 517,000 entries alone.
